Spring 2021 Old Military Road Trail Update
Hello Spring! This season of growth and hope is reflected in many wonderful strides ahead for the Old Military Road Trail Project. As many of you have been aware, the OMRT Committee has worked behind the scenes throughout the worst of the pandemic. During this time we have greatly benefitted from organizational and technical help from the Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance program of the NPS, and our grant has been extended for another year. All this activity and preparation has paid off beautifully.
We have completed our ongoing Concept Proposal and have received positive feedback and suggestions from key partners and public entities. The proposal is now available on the ROUTE page our website as a PDF. Both the slideshow and the video will be featured on May 13 at 10:30-11:30 via zoom for the History Lives Here month, each with a short discussion time afterward. (Watch for Zoom details coming soon.) History not only lives here, it thrives here! A short movie by filmmaker Michael Noonan and team members is being made as well.
Also coming in April, the 2021 Spring Trail Times article will feature False Bay Road, the second of eight proposed segments of the trail. We are excited that upon completion of the new American Camp Visitor Center this summer, the first full trail segment will officially begin there at its true origin. (The first partial trail segment was featured in the 2020 Spring Trail Times, also on our website.) We are very fortunate that the signage design for that OMRT trailhead at American Camp is underway, with more public lands signage coming in other segments as permission is obtained.
Our fruitful partnership with key partners is helping to further develop the planned route. We are also scheduling presentations with community groups and organizations to open the dialogue with the public about the OMRT and receive feedback.
This is a very exciting time in so many ways. Your participation and support will be key factors in this community effort.
